SUMMER 2012

Here are descriptions of where Mel will be conducting workshops in the summer of 2012.  For specific information including class availability, class description, registration, tuition, accommodations, etc., please contact the individual workshop organizers listed on our ' 12 Contact Info page.

Mel's first workshop of the summer  will be in beautiful Cape Cod, Massachusetts in June where he will be teaching a five-day, outdoor on location workshop for the Creative Arts Center in the charming coastal town of Chatham. Located halfway between Falmouth and Provincetown, Chatham offers typical New England scenery...magnificent sea & shore vistas, historical villages, and picturesque streets lined with 18th century homes, cottages, and gardens.  There are miles of white-sand beaches with views of Nantucket Sound and the Atlantic.  Home to the famous Chatham Lighthouse situated near the elbow of Cape Cod, plentiful painting sites await in this richly historic town. With average daytime temperatures in the mid 70s, this is a perfect time of year for an outdoor workshop "on the Cape."

Painting in beautiful New England is what Mel will be doing when he returns to Landgrove, Vermont to conduct a five-day, plein-air workshop in July. The small, quaint village of Landgrove is located in Bennington County in south-central  Vermont. The natural beauty of Vermont is everywhere from the typical New England landscapes of meadows, streams, farms, barns, covered bridges, and country lanes to its small villages and historic towns.  The InView Center for the Arts at The Landgrove Inn will be hosting the workshop and will be providing lodging.  Situated on 35 acres, the Inn is an 1810 farmhouse turned into a lovely bed & breakfast with 18 uniquely decorated rooms. In addition to offering fine dining, the Inn has a relaxing & comfortable lounge, courtyard garden, pond, swimming pool, and tennis courts.  Breathe in the clear, crisp country air in this mountain valley location and enjoy a great summer workshop in Vermont.

Mel will be traveling abroad to beautiful Amsterdam, The Netherlands to conduct a plein-air workshop in July.  Amsterdam is one of Europe's leading cultural centers with its many art galleries and prestigious museums such as the Van Gogh Museum. Known as the "City of Festivals," Amsterdam is world renowned for its canals (165 canals!), historic architecture, antique shops, and windmills of which there are eight windmills in and around the city from the 17th and 18th centuries.  There will be much to paint and there will also be time to sightsee and view the architecture and scenery including the magnificent parks with their colorful fields of breathtaking flowers...hyacinth, narcissus, daffodils, and tulips (of course!).  Rich in art and culture, Amsterdam is ideal for a unique painting experience! Flying Colors Art Workshops organizes all of Mel's workshops in Mexico and Europe and, as always, chooses quality, comfortable accommodations.  You may contact Flying Colors for a specific itinerary by going to our Contact Info. page.

Mel's summer schedule continues with a return visit to Greenville, New York in August to conduct a five-day workshop for Hudson River Valley Art Workshops. Situated in the foothills of the beautiful Catskill Mountains in Greene County, the town of Greenville offers much in sightseeing and has numerous hiking and walking  trails. There are many museums and historic sites to visit.  Hudson River Valley Art Workshops owns Greenville Arms 1889 Inn, a quaint bed & breakfast where students are welcome to stay. Offering a relaxing atmosphere and delicious meals, this charming Victorian inn has comfortable rooms, lovely grounds and gardens, and an outdoor pool.  This workshop will consist of three days painting landscapes and people in landscapes outdoors on location and two days painting  in the  studio with one of the indoor days painting a clothed model.  This popular workshop tends to fill up quickly so our suggestion is to register early!

Mel heads to Maine, one of his favorite places to paint, where he will conduct a five-day, outdoor on location workshop in Rockland, Maine.  Named one of the 2010 America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Rockland is known for its picturesque working waterfront and harbors, which make for great painting locales.  New England sites are everywhere...from the many seaside villages to the lighthouses including Rockland Breakwater Light, Owls Head Light, and Marshall Point Light. Take a leisurely walk on Rockland's historic Main Street with its art galleries and restaurants serving delicious lobster.  Rockland is home to the famous Farnsworth Art Museum, which has exhibitions of work done by three generations of Wyeths.  It houses an extensive collection of temperas, watercolors, and drybrush paintings and drawings by Andrew Wyeth.  Coastal Maine Art Workshops will be hosting this workshop.  They have a large studio, which is accessible 24 hours a day.  Rockland, which is located about two hours up the coast from Portland, is an ideal summer destination for a watercolor workshop.
