Mel's spring schedule begins in Island Heights, New Jersey where Mel will be conducting a four-day workshop in early May for the Ocean County Artists' Guild. The town of Island Heights is situated in the middle of a federally registered historic district between Barnegat Bay and the Toms River. The Island Heights Historical District has more than 375 Victorian era structures. Take a relaxing stroll through the lovely streets to view the beautiful Victorian architecture or walk along the picturesque waterfront and along the banks of the Toms River with its large pavilion. The renovated art facility is part of a beautiful historic Victorian house originally built in 1880. The Guild is located on a quiet street along the Toms River. This workshop will consist of three days painting indoors and one day painting outdoors.
Staying in his homestate, Mel will be conducting a three-day, indoor workshop in May in Allendale, New Jersey for the Community Arts Association. Allendale is located in northern Bergen County. The Community Arts Association is a non-profit art organization open to all artists and art enthusiasts. The Association is very active offering spring and fall workshops as well as demonstrations and lectures. It also holds member shows and outdoor painting trips. Formed in 1965, the Community Arts Association is made up of both professional and amateur artists and always welcomes new members. In addition to the workshop, painting landscapes and people in landscapes, Mel will be doing an evening demonstration as well as judging their annual Member Show.
Mel continues his spring schedule traveling to Buffalo, New York in mid-May to conduct a five-day indoor/outdoor workshop for the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society. This 30-year old Society, which promotes transparent watercolor and has nearly 250 members, holds workshops and juried exhibitions and has demonstrations and lectures as well. Buffalo is located in western New York on the eastern shores of Lake Erie and at the head of the Niagara River which flows northward over Niagara Falls and into Lake Ontario. This cultural city is home to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, which has one of the most extensive collections of modern art, and the internationally acclaimed Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. There are tree-filled parks with beautiful 19th-century houses and national historic landmarks by Frank Lloyd Wright. Nearby is the breathtaking and magnificent Niagara Falls, which is the second oldest falls in the world. In addition to the workshop, Mel will be doing an evening demonstration as well as judging their annual show.
Mel heads to Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania where he will be conducting his annual plein air workshop over the three-day Memorial Day weekend. Chadds Ford, located southwest of Philadelphia and close to the Delaware border, is rich in rustic farmland, country roads, meadows with wildflowers, historic stone inns...all of which make ideal painting locations. Chadds Ford is known for being Andrew Wyeth's birthplace and home. The famous Brandywine River Museum, which is a century-old gristmill, is home to one of the largest collections of works by three generations of Wyeths, and is also home to the Brandywine Wildflower and Native Plant Gardens situated in landscaped woodlands and meadows. The Brandywine Battlefield Park, a National Historic Landmark, is the site of the Battle of Brandywine fought during the American Revolution in 1777. The renowned Longwood Gardens with its magnificent gardens and flowers in nearby Kennett Square is a must see. For those whose schedules don't allow time for a 5-day workshop, this 3-day holiday weekend workshop is ideal.
Mel makes his way to New England to conduct a five-day, outdoor on location workshop in early June for IS183, Art School of the Berkshires in the quaint village of Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Located in a historic landmark home, Citizens Hall, IS183 is situated in the Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts. Stockbridge was described by Norman Rockwell as "the best of America, the best of New England." Closeby are the beautiful Berkshire Botanical Gardens and the Chesterwood Estate & Museum, which was the 1920s summer home, studio, and garden of the sculptor Daniel Chester French. Stockbridge is a renowned art and cultural center famous for its Tanglewood Music Festival, Berkshire Theatre Festival, and the Norman Rockwell Museum, which houses the world's largest collection of original art by the renowned American illustrator. The Bidwell House Museum, surrounded by 20 acres of beautiful grounds and hiking trails, was built around 1750 and is authentically restored and is filled with antiques. In addition to the numerous galleries, boutiques, historic homes, and gardens to visit in Stockbridge, the Berkshire countryside offers many walking, hiking, and cycling trails. Join Mel in Stockbridge. June is a great time of year for a painting holiday!
