SPRING 2010

Here are descriptions of where Mel will be conducting workshops in the spring of 2010.  For specific information including class availability, class descrip- tion, registration, tuition, accommodations, etc., please contact the individual workshop organizers listed on the ' 10 Contact Info page.

Mel's spring schedule begins with a four-day workshop in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio in April.  Named after the Cuyahoga River, which flows into Lake Erie, the town of Cuyahoga Falls borders Akron to the south and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park to the northwest.  With its waterfalls, rolling hills, winding river scenery, and lush farmland, this 51-square mile park is the only national park in Ohio.  Founded in 1934, the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center is a non-profit organization which provides workshops, exhibitions, and 3000 square feet of gallery and classroom space to the arts community. Their dedication to the arts is exemplified by their wide variety of classes including drawing, composition, watercolor, acrylics, oil painting, and pottery.  This workshop will consist of three days painting indoors and one day painting outdoors.

Mel is looking forward to making a return visit to Boone, North Carolina at the end of April where he will be conducting a five-day, indoor workshop for Cheap Joe's Art Stuff.  The town of Boone is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern  North Carolina.  Much exploring of this area was done in the 1700s and Boone acquired its name from the famous pioneer Daniel Boone.  Situated in the breathtaking valley amidst some of the oldest mountains in the world, this scenic area offers country roads, beautiful waterfalls, wildlife, and a wide variety of plants.  Spring brings to Boone trees and flowers in bloom, woodland paths with rare birds, and magnificent vistas.  Cheap Joe's state-of-the-art workshop studio offers terrific views of the area and has a covered porch with rocking chairs for some relaxation.  Complimentary coffee, tea, and fresh fruit is offered each day.  True Southern hospitality awaits!

Traveling back to his homestate, Mel will be in Island Heights, New Jersey conducting a four-day workshop in May for the Ocean County Artists' Guild.  The town of Island Heights is situated in the middle of a federally registered historic district between Barnegat Bay and the Toms River. The Island Heights Historical District has more than 375 Victorian era structures. Take a relaxing stroll through the lovely streets to view the beautiful Victorian architecture or walk along the picturesque waterfront and along the banks of the Toms River with its large pavilion.  The renovated art facility is part of a beautiful 100-year old historic Victorian house originally built in 1880.  The Guild is located on a quiet street along the Toms River.  This workshop will consist of three days painting indoors and one day painting outdoors.

Mel heads to Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania where he will be conducting his annual plein air workshop over the three-day Memorial Day weekend.  Chadds Ford, located southwest of Philadelphia and close to the Delaware border, is rich in rustic farmland, country roads, meadows with wildflowers, historic stone inns...all of which  make ideal painting locations.  Chadds Ford is known for being Andrew Wyeth's birthplace and home.  The famous Brandywine River Museum, which is a century-old gristmill, is home to one of the largest collections of works by three generations of Wyeths, and is also home to the Brandywine Wildflower and Native Plant Gardens situated in landscaped woodlands and meadows.  The Brandywine Battlefield Park, a National Historic Landmark, is the site of the Battle of Brandywine fought during the American Revolution in 1777.  For those whose schedules don't allow time for a five-day workshop, this three-day holiday weekend workshop is ideal.  Always popular, it is best to sign up early for this one!
