SPRING 2007
Here are brief descriptions of where Mel will be conducting workshops in the spring of 2007. For specific information including class availability, class description, registration, tuition, accommodations, etc., please contact the individual workshop organizers listed on the Contact Info. page.
Mel's spring workshop schedule begins in early April with an indoor workshop in Bedminster, New Jersey at the Somerset Art Association. Bedminster, located in Somerset County, is south of Morristown and just south of Bernardsville. Founded in 1970, the Somerset Art Association holds workshops in their turn-of-the-century school building. They sponsor year-round art classes within their large and airy studios that have floor-to-ceiling windows. Their Johnson Gallery offers two spacious floors of exhibition space for various one-person and group shows throughout the year.
Heading south to Lewisburg, West Virginia at the end of April into early May, Mel will be conducting two weeks of indoor workshops for the Greenbrier Artists. Lewisburg, which is just two hours southeast of Charleston, is located in the Greenbrier Valley nestled in the heart of a bluegrass plateau. Set amid the Allegheny Mountains, Lewisburg is surrounded by a beautiful valley rich with natural wonders. There are many 18th and 19th century buildings. Just outside of the historic district there are country roads, rolling farmlands, 19th century farmhouses, and manor houses.
Mel's spring schedule continues as he makes a return visit to Atlanta, Georgia in mid-May where he will be conducting an outdoor on location workshop for the Spruill Center for the Arts. The Spruill Homeplace, the center of a large working farm in Dunwoody, Georgia dating back to the mid-19th century, and five surrounding acres were donated to the Spruill Center. Established in 1975, Spruill Center offers a wide range of programs as well as professional artist exhibitions. Atlanta, a city full of history, has numerous art galleries, museums, historic houses, scenic gardens, and nature trails.
Returning to Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, Mel will be conducting his annual on location workshop over the three-day Memorial Day weekend. Chadds Ford, located southwest of Philadelphia and close to the Delaware border, is rich in rustic farmland, country roads, meadows with wildflowers, historic stone inns...all of which make ideal painting locales. Chadds Ford is known for being Andrew Wyeth's birthplace and home. Students are welcome to join Mel one afternoon to visit the famous Brandywine River Museum, which is a century-old gristmill. It is the home to one of the largest collections of works by three generations of Wyeths.
In early June, Mel will be in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania to conduct an outdoor workshop organized by The Art Center School and Galleries. Located in south central Pennsylvania, The Art Center School began in 1954 as the Mechanicsburg Art Club and in 1971 they purchased and renovated a picturesque century-old barn. They offer a comprehensive program of workshops and hold exhibits throughout the year. Mechanicsburg, a town rich in history and which was named for a settlement of mechanics who repaired and made wagons in the early 1800s, has many historical buildings and sites.
