The beginning of the fall season brings Mel to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts where he will be conducting a five-day, outdoor on location workshop. Located about five miles off the coast of Cape Cod, the beautiful island of Martha’s Vineyard is just a 45-minute ferryboat ride from the harbor town of Woods Hole. Martha’s Vineyard, first established by English settlers in 1642, is comprised of 100 square miles of pristine beaches, nature preserves, historic villages, and six island towns, one of which is the colonial picturesque seaport of Edgartown. Edgartown has magnificent mansions along its harbor built by whaling captains and ship owners in the 1800s. Known today for its unique boutiques, Edgartown is also famous for its many great restaurants. On North Water Street, one can see beautiful homes in the Federal, Colonial, and Greek Revival architectural styles. Menemsha Harbor offers numerous watercolor subjects with its boat- houses, fishing boats, and docks. Another site to paint is Edgartown Lighthouse, which is among the Vineyard's five lighthouses that look out over Vineyard Sound and Nantucket Sound. September on Martha’s Vineyard is an ideal time of year to visit because summer vacationers have returned home. This workshop makes for a great fall painting holiday.
Mel happily returns to beautiful New England at the end of September to conduct a five-day, plein-air workshop in Landgrove, Vermont for the Vermont Watercolor Society. The small, quaint village of Landgrove is located in Bennington County in southern Vermont and is near the towns of Peru and Londonderry. The natural beauty of Vermont is everywhere from the typical New England landscapes of meadows, streams, farms, barns, covered bridges, and country lanes to its small villages and historic towns. The Landgrove Inn, which will be providing lodging, is an 1810 farmhouse turned into a lovely bed & breakfast. The Inn offers comfortable accommodations in a beautiful mountain valley. Clear, crisp autumn air and fall foliage abounds with magnificent colors of reds, yellows, and oranges. The end of September is the time of peak color in southern Vermont. The combination of sunny days with pleasant, cool nights along with countless painting subjects makes autumn in Vermont perfect for a watercolor workshop.
Mel concludes his 2010 schedule in Old Lyme, Connecticut in October with a four-day, outdoor on location workshop for the Lyme Art Association. Old Lyme, located on the east bank of the mouth of the Connecticut River where it meets the Long Island Sound, is known for its Colonial and Federal architecture which lines its main streets and country roads. Discovered by the American Impres- sionists in 1899, Old Lyme has remained a painter's paradise for more than 100 years. The Lyme Art Association Gallery, established in 1914, was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 and is situated in the heart of the Historic District of Old Lyme. Old Lyme has beautiful parks, boat landings on the Connecticut River, tidal estuaries, and forested hills, all of which make great painting locations. The famous Florence Griswold Museum, home of American Impressionism, has numerous exhibitions and extensive collections. Autumn in Connecticut is a great time of year for a watercolor workshop and mid-October is the beginning of the peak season of colors. Enjoy and paint the vibrant fall foliage with Mel in Old Lyme!
